- I am first of all the homeschooling mother of six children and the wife to a great lighting design engineer. I am a retired Christian reading and language arts teacher. I have been an intensive phonics reading tutor for 29 years. I am gravely concerned that American school children are missing out on the adventure of reading simply because they struggle to read so many of the words they come across. I am especially frustrated because learning to read should be made simple, just like it was made simple for a little girl named Candy back in the 1950's. A systematic phonics program is just that - a system for learning intensive phonics, and that system should be a step-by-step, uncomplicated, easy-to-use and understand system! It was this kind of "system" that taught little Candy to read back in the 1950's.
