who will have difficulty learning to read?

 

I strongly believe that reading labels can often prove to be destructive to children.  I was reading an article written by Carleton Kendrick, Ed.M., LCSW, in which he states,

 

Today, far too many children suffer the shattering of their self-worth by being labeled learning disabled. Pediatricians prescribe Ritalin for preschoolers who have been “officially diagnosed” with ADD by their kindergarten teachers. A mom introduces her son to me at our first therapy session by saying, “He’s an ADD.” (I’m waiting for the day a parent introduces a child to me as “a cystic fibrosis.”)

Frighteningly, the field of academic learning disabilities has become a medical model categorization system in which children with “learning diseases” are identified at young ages — and medicated for life.”

 

I realize that parents want solutions, and that part of obtaining solutions is to gain a diagnosis of what is actually causing their child’s reading struggle.

 

I also realize that there are, indeed, some children who are truly dyslexic or that suffer with some degree of autism. But here’s my problem.  Very few “authorities” in our school systems are recommending that just “maybe” the problem might be that the WRONG teaching method for reading has been used to teach the child. 

 

I have found in my tutoring sessions, that most children can be taught read using a 4WAY Phonics approach.

 

For example, there was once a little girl named, Candy, who grew up in the 1950’s.  Candy’s teacher labeled her as someone who would struggle with reading for the rest of her life.  Fortunately, back then, there were still teachers who believed in a strong systematic 4WAY phonics approach (probably because back then, many teachers had been taught to read with phonics and had grown up in school systems where it was rare that a child did not learn to read).  Consequently, when Candy received her “label,” her mother sought help from some of the teachers in her school system that still believed in systematic 4WAY phonics.
