Room to Read
I have fondly supported this charity for many years since I heard the founder, John Wood, speak in our area. Room to Read helps build small libraries in remote corners of the world, and, best yet, funds local authors to write books in the language and about the culture where the children nearby understand.
The fund raisers for Room to Read are held all over the world. They range in price of a few dollars and beer for drinks, to quite a bit more and champaign.
One of the best ways to find out more about Room to Read and help spread the word about our mission to educate children in developing countries is to attend an event in your area. Room to Read has volunteer chapters around the globe that host events to help us raise money and awareness for our programs. Room to Read seeks to transform the lives of millions of children in developing countries by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education. Working in collaboration with local communities, partner organizations and governments, we develop literacy skills and a habit of reading among primary school children, and support girls to complete secondary school with the relevant life skills to succeed in school and beyond.
Note also that they have a wide variety of very interesting jobs available, too, in the US and around the world.
