I am working with a young company that specializes in creating attractive music and materials for middle school students, and students who need or are looking for alternative ways of introducing basic concepts of math, science, language arts and social studies into their study curriculum. I design games, puzzles, and quizzes and try to identify useful resources for busy teachers and home school parents to access. All of our materials are easy to download and use, and most all are free of charge.
What I would like most of all is feedback on current materials, and ideas for new material. Home school parents are very creative people and often have great ideas for entertaining activities that really help students learn.
My life has been spent living in different parts of the US and Europe and raising 3 children who are now young adults. We have experienced 7 seven school systems and my husband and I have done a lot of teaching and enrichment at home. Our children are very successful students, and I believe it is because of their varied school experiences and their ability to adjust quickly to new teaching environments. We have always supported their efforts and feel richly rewarded.
We have learned that great teaching moments are often in the least obvious places and generally not very expensive. Creativity and commitment are two vital factors, but perhaps the most important is the ability to recognize what your child really connects with as a learning device. For many it is music. Contemporary popular hiphop is one of the most underappreciated forms of communicating information today. We are working closely with a young hiphop company that is writing some of the best academic material on the market for middle schoolers. They have a free streaming service from their website, www.educationalrap.com. It is worth a look and listen to see if this is right for your child. Created by a young Harvard grad, the rappers tend to be young medical, law and education professionals who really know how to reach students.
Another free and attractive site for science students is www.takeaimatclimatechange.org. which is a film on global warming using hiphop (from the same company) to get across basic scientific knowledge and precepts regarding global warming. Great music, good information and fun to watch!
