This Week’s Q&A

Restarting the learning of a 7th grade home school student

Question:

We have a 7th grader that we have decided to start homeschooling. I have no idea what I am doing. Any suggestions would be appreciated. My son has been failing almost every class since he started Jr. High. He hates school and has gotten involved with a rough crowd. I am so overwhelmed with how to get started and what to do. Please help – I need a lot of support!!

 Answer:

Read more about the reasons why deschooling can help you and your son get off on the right foot. Tammy Takahashi, has written a book about deschooling called Deschooling Gently. Discover the best way to educate your children at home, not through rote process, but by learning how to find the answer within yourself.

It is best to take your time to get your son to come around and become interested in learning once again. For now, if he wants to learn to skate board better or just vegetate on his bed for a week or two, just let him be. Then gradually start taking him out to interesting places. Some ideas may be going to a science museum, or a zoo or maybe a ship yard or for a hike in the woods. Join a homeschool support group and introduce light academics around his interest areas. For instance, there is a lot of Math involved in building a model skate park to scale. It’s also creative and if your son likes skate boarding, this learning activity could spark his interest.
