It is absolutely absurd


that American children


are not learning how to read!


Memorizing whole words

instead of learning to sound out words is ridiculous.


TONS OF CHILDREN are NOT LEARNING TO READ because instead of learning to sound out words, they are concentrating on The Common Core Dolch Sight Word List which emphasizes the memorization of WHOLE, high frequency “service words” for children as young as kindergarten.


Of course, the memorization of whole words is an ABSURD way to teach small children how to read, but most parents (and teachers) desire to trust “the educator” (or “the professor”) believing that it’s in the best interest of American children.


However, let’s imagine for just a minute if we taught other “services” in this same way. For example, let’s take the “servicing” of broken washing machines.


Suppose you decided to train someone who has been raised in a remote area (someplace where electrical service was not available) to “service” broken washing machines.


The first thing you’d need to show him is what an average homemaker knows:
1) what a washing machine looks like
2) what it does
3) which button to push to make it work


After that you’d take the washing machine apart and show him each mechanical part, explain each part’s function, and, finally, demonstrate for him exactly how each part carries out its function in correlation with all the functions of the other mechanical parts.


Now imagine just how RIDICULOUS it would be to skip all of that instruction (simply because teaching all of that takes so much time) and, instead, show your student pictures of each of the machine parts, and then ask him to memorize the name of each part by showing him the pictures of the parts over and over and over and over again.


Then, make your next step the following:

“Hey, Joey, now that you know what each part looks like, go on over to Mrs. Smith’s house and fix her broken washing machine.”


How many Joeys would be able to pull that off to a customer’s satisfaction?

You see, Joey may learn what a motor pulley looks like or he may be able to recognize an off-balance switch

or an agitator or a water inlet valve, but how many washing machines do you think Joey will go through before he either:

a) learns how all those washing machine parts function together or

b) develops such a low self image that he up and quits his job?



And yet,

as ridiculous

as all of that sounds,


all the necessary instruction

and jumping right into 

the memorization

of whole words

is precisely the method

we’re using to teach

our small children to read, 

simply because

our educators believe that

“Teaching phonics 

takes too much time!”  

(Yeah! That’s BOLOGNA!)


You see, instead of first teaching our students the individual letter sounds, and then teaching them the short vowel sounds and then building them into simple, short-vowel words by showing them how to BLEND THOSE SOUNDS TOGETHER in order to read beginning short-vowel words like:


INSTRUCTORS TODAY MAKE THE MISTAKE of trying to SAVE TIME by jumping them into memorizing WHOLE words like:


and even r-controlled words like:



No wonder so many kids hate school or develop self image problems.

We are asking them to do things in life we haven’t prepared them to do.

You don’t teach a kid how to swim by throwing him into the deep end of the pool and telling him to swim a few laps.

Yeah, some kids may tread water and make it, but I’ll bet you dollars to donuts that at least 40% of them WILL DROWN!


But, hey, what do we care, right? The majority survive. They muddle through. Hey, some even go on to college.



So how do we answer this absurdity?  I hear this one often:

“That’s life. I guess it’s about time we all learned to deal with disappointments. I’ve done everything I can, and my child still can’t read.”

We Need to Teach the Phonics Rules!

It just scares me


that so many of our children


in this great nation


are growing up


without ever learning


the phonics rules.



You see, rules make a difference in life; rules make a difference in the mechanics of reading and in making sense of what we read. Likewise, phonics rules make a huge difference in the way children see words which will make a difference in how our children interpret the meaning of those words.


Reading words should be EASY by the time a child reaches the fourth grade.  The blending of sounds and syllables should effortlessly spill out of a child’s mouth by the time he graduates from the third grade.




Sadly, children are NOT learning the phonics rules, so the effortless blending of syllables and sounds is NOT taking place in fourth grade, in fifth grade, in sixth grade, in junior high or in high school.  And, yes, that means it is NOT taking place fluently in our colleges either. 



For example, if a child does not know how to correctly pronounce and distinguish between the basic short and long vowel sounds and if a child does not know the rules that make those sounds long or short, he will eventually struggle reading words he is not familiar with.

If a child does not know his diphthongs and that those letter combinations create brand new vowel sounds, he will eventually struggle reading words he is not familiar with.

If a child does not know his digraphs and that those letter combinations create brand new sounds, he will eventually struggle reading words he is not familiar with.

If a child does not know his long vowels and that an open syllable that ends in a vowel will cause that vowel to say its long sound, he will eventually struggle reading words he is not familiar with.

If a child does not know why and when the letter “C” and the letter “G” say their soft sounds and if he does not know the unique sounds of R-controlled phonemes, he will eventually struggle reading words he is not familiar with.



There are many, many phonics rules, but they each follow a pattern and they can EASILY be taught to a child if he is given explicit, intensive step-by-step, lesson by lesson phonics training in his early years. Moreover, if a child is trained in this way, he will have no problem dividing a word into sounds and syllables from the junior high years and beyond – it will be second nature to him – something he doesn’t even have to think about.


Folks, that is NOT happening in our schools today, and we now have a nation FULL of illiteracy – a nation where our people cannot read – a nation where our people are afraid to even try to read – a nation where our people can’t get jobs or live a full life because they cannot read every word on every page effortlessly.


Has your child gone through this explicit, intensive phonics training?

If not, give it to him now. 

If he is older and struggling in reading give him that training now. 

If he is in the 4th, 5th, 6th,7th, or 8th grade and struggling in reading, give him that training now.


Our children deserve that training.  They deserve to know how to sound out, effortlessly, every word on every page for the rest of their lives.

Our Teachers do NOT know Systematic Phonics!

So many  parents today


are exclaiming:


“Help!  My child is not learning 

to read in his classroom!”


This is because our teachers do not know phonics – synthetic, explicit, systematic, phonics-first phonics; so our public schools are failing to teach our children how to sound out words systematically, using a systematic phonics curriculum.


This is NOT the fault of our teachers.  Sadly, the colleges our teachers are trained in do not offer them methods classes in explicit phonics or in how to teach the sounding out of the phonograms in a systematic form.


So our kids are memorizing words like “elephant” in kindergarten or first grade without first learning how to sound out words from left to right or that the letters ph represent the sound of letter f


Oh, I know, there are plenty of children coming home with smiles because their report cards tell parents that their children are learning to read, but it’s a hoax.


It’s simply not true. Children are NOT LEARNING to sound out words; children are learning to either memorize whole words or they are taught “to guess” at words based upon the context of the sentence, the shape of the word, or how the word begins.


 You see,  the standard for the meaning of “literacy” has changed. You can see that changing standard when you read our newspaper articles or when you read the words put up on the screens in our church praise and worship time. There are spelling errors and homonym errors galore.


This is because children are being taught to read using whole language memorization by teachers who only know how to teach using whole language memorization, in spite of the fact that one of the standards set forth in the Common Core Guidelines is that children should be taught to read using systematic phonics.  

 Sadly, even though Common Core standards call for systematic phonics, our children are NOT receiving it because there isn’t one state college ANYWHERE in the nation that teaches our teachers systematic phonics. As a result, there are also NO READING CURRICULUMS in the public schools that teach systematic phonics.


 Are you understanding now


why our children


cannot sound out words


and why 40% of our fourth graders


cannot read at grade level?  




When the majority of our teachers themselves have been trained to read through sight-reading techniques and, then, are not being offered a college training course in systematic phonics, it spells disaster for the next generation of public school students.


The late Phyllis Schlafly explained perfectly what’s going on in American public classrooms when she said:


“Whole Language teaches children to guess at words by looking at the pictures on the page, to memorize a few dozen frequently used words, to skip over words they don’t know, to substitute words that seem to fit, and to predict the words they think will come next. The child who is taught those bad habits, instead of how to sound out the syllables, will never be able to read big words or become a good reader.


Many schools give high grades and happy report cards to children who are good at guessing and memorizing words, so parents don’t realize that their children are being taught to guess instead of to read. Self-esteem is a higher priority than literacy.”
